The very latest frontiers of vertebral surgery

For many years, in the collective imagination, vertebral surgery has been associated with interventions characterized by a certain surgical aggressiveness; and in fact, the traditional “open-air” methods determining the exposure and manipulation of the muscles and all the paraverte-bral tissues, fundamental elements for the physiological biomechanics of the rachis and therefore also for a correct posture, often produce a significant reduction of post-operative quality of life.

In recent years, however, vertebral surgery, thanks to the progress of technology and materials, has had an extraordinary development. In fact, the possibilities of treatment of herniated discs, fractures, scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, multiple discopathies and canalic stenosis have multiplied, with minimally invasive approaches that aim to preserve the integrity of the muscular and articular structures. “These methods, much less aggressive than traditional ones, preserve the patient’s anatomical integrity more, and allow to achieve the same clinical result of traditional surgery with smaller incisions, thus guaranteeing a faster recovery and a minor operative morbidity “says Prof. Massimo Miscusi, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the Sant’Andrea Hospital-University and at the Quisisana and Sanatrix nursing homes in Rome.

Prof. what is the minimally invasive vertebral surgery and for which pathologies it is possible to use it?

These are new surgical techniques, with which it is possible to treat many pathological conditions of the spine, minimizing damage to paravertebral tissues. However, it is important to underline that this is always true surgery, which should not be confused with all those percutaneous parachritic techniques that are used exclusively for the treatment of pain and are not intended to cure the disease.

What advantages does this surgery offer the patient?

Minimally invasive surgery offers many advantages compared to traditional vertebral column surgery: smaller incisions and, therefore, less post-operative pain and better aesthetic results; lower risk of blood loss; collapse of the risk of infections; shorter hospital stay; a quicker return to work and to the activities of daily life.
