The NSA association of Rome, thanks to a highly specialized and multidisciplinary team, assists patients in all phases of the therapeutic path

The association of neurosurgery and pain therapy NSA of Rome, born for the strong will of the three founding partners Jacopo Lenzi, Antonio Nardone and Emiliano Passacantilli, is an important point of reference in the national health scene in the field of Neurosurgery, with a strong endowment technologically advanced technology and a highly specialized and multidisciplinary team, able to assist patients in all phases of the therapeutic process.

Dr. Jacopo Lenzi, how widespread is the lumbar disc hernia today?

“It is one of the most common diseases of the spine and is the cause in the vast majority of cases of low back pain, which is the very strong pain that radiates from the lumbar region to the gluteus up to the foot. The pain is caused by the pressure that the hernia exerts on one of the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. In many cases this disorder can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, rest and targeted physiotherapy that help the re-absorption of the hernia and the restoration of the correct posture of the spine “.

Dr. Antonio Nardone when it is necessary to resort to surgery?

“The patient must undergo surgery when the pain does not recede after a targeted conservative therapy, in the presence of deficit of strength or when it needs a quick return to sports or work activity. In our association there are fellow specialists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, rheumatologists and pain therapists who collaborate with us in the therapeutic decision. The multidisciplinary approach is fundamental in the modern therapy of diseases of the spine, since the patient must be evaluated as a whole “.

Dr. Emiliano Passacantilli, which techniques do you use for the removal of the hernia?

“With the advent of new technologies and the refinement of classical techniques, neurosurgical operations are now performed with a low rate of complications and mortality. Among the methods available, percutaneous (radiofrequency or LASER (PLDD)) are used for the treatment of disc protrusions: in this case a simple needle with local anesthesia is needed to solve the problem. With spinal endoscopy, which also allows the removal of hernias expelled and migrated through a skin incision of about 8 mm, the patient remains in the clinic one day and the results are truly extraordinary. Finally microsurgery is the most used technique in the world since it allows to remove any type of disc herniation under general anesthesia. Also in this case the skin incisions and the paravertebral muscles’ engagement are reduced to a minimum and the hospitalization is only two days “.
