{"id":514,"date":"2018-03-09T14:09:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T13:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/britishdailynews.co.uk\/?p=514"},"modified":"2018-03-09T14:09:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T13:09:42","slug":"colbert-on-nunbergs-threat-to-mueller-you-know-he-can-arrest-you-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/britishdailynews.co.uk\/?p=514","title":{"rendered":"Colbert on Nunberg&#8217;s threat to Mueller: &#8216;You know he can arrest you, right?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Late-night hosts on Monday discussed former Trump aide Sam Nunberg\u2019s bizarre appearances on cable news, the fallout from Trump\u2019s tariffs and the 2018 Oscars.<\/p>\n<h2>Stephen Colbert<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cRight before we taped the show the entire news cycle jumped on the bus to Crazy Town,\u201d said\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/stephen-colbert\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Stephen Colbert<\/a>. \u201cAt the wheel: former Trump campaign aide and guy-telling-the-stripper-how-much-he-loves-his-kids Sam Nunberg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s what happened: Robert Mueller issued a subpoena to Nunberg to get him to testify about the Russia investigation,\u201d Colbert explained. \u201cAnd not only did Nunberg say he won\u2019t show up; he was planning to go on Bloomberg TV and tear up the subpoena.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"element element-video fig--has-shares fig--narrow-caption fig--no-caption\" data-canonical-url=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fITP0H3OVA0\" data-component=\"video-inbody-embed\">\n<div class=\"block-share block-share--article  hide-on-mobile \" data-link-name=\"block share\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But before that happened, Colbert explained, Nunberg called into MSNBC\u2019s Katy Tur for a strange interview in which he explained he would not comply with Mueller\u2019s subpoena because he does not want to take the time going over his emails with Roger Stone, Steve Bannon and Hope Hicks. Nunberg added that it \u201cwould be funny\u201d if he was arrested or held in contempt of court for his refusal to comply.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|620,1|620,350|fluid\" data-google-query-id=\"CJS8q7-n39kCFdOLUQodMJkNxw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/59666047\/theguardian.com\/culture\/article\/ng_6__container__\" class=\"ad-slot__content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNunberg seemed to acknowledge how far he was flying off the handle here,\u201d Colbert added, showing a clip from the interview in which Nunberg says \u201cmy lawyer\u2019s gonna dump me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Colbert went on: \u201cNunberg took over cable news like a car chase. He was on MSNBC at 2.45, CNN at 3.30 and CNN again at four o\u2019clock. I believe at five he called into HGTV to incriminate himself on Flip or Flop. I\u2019m pretty sure after Mueller gets through with him, it\u2019s gonna be flip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The host also showed footage of Nunberg saying the Russia investigation was caused by\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0\u201cbecause he\u2019s an idiot\u201d, and then showed a statement Nunberg made to the Washington Post that read, \u201cDonald Trump won this election on his own. He campaigned his ass off. And there is nobody who hates him more than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In one of his final cable news appearances, Nunberg said defiantly, \u201cI\u2019m not cooperating; arrest me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know Mueller can arrest you, right?\u201d Colbert asked. \u201cThat\u2019s like saying \u2018Eat me\u2019 to Hannibal Lecter.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Trevor Noah<\/h2>\n<p>Comedy Central\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/trevor-noah\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Trevor Noah<\/a>\u00a0addressed the Republican pushback to Trump\u2019s idea of imposing tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnsurprisingly, a lot of people were against Trump\u2019s idea to impose tariffs on every nation in the world,\u201d Noah said. \u201cBut the strongest opposition came from within the president\u2019s own party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah showed footage of senators Orrin Hatch and Lindsey Graham voicing their opposition on cable news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I the only person who still thinks it\u2019s weird that lawmakers have to go on TV just so they can speak directly to their president?\u201d Noah said. \u201cIt\u2019s only a matter of time before lobbyists start planting their agendas inside Happy Meals. He doesn\u2019t think once.\u201d The host then showed Trump\u2019s tweet, in which he says \u201ctrade wars are good and easy to win\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, trade wars aren\u2019t easy to win,\u201d Noah said, mentioning the pitfalls of George Bush\u2019s steel tariffs and Barack Obama\u2019s tire tariffs. \u201cEven if it\u2019s bad policy, America could be headed for a trade war. To be honest, of all the wars we thought Trump could get us into \u2013 nuclear war, race war \u2013 a trade war is the least bad option.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Jimmy Kimmel<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/jimmy-kimmel\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>, who hosted Sunday night\u2019s Oscars, discussed the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a long night last night,\u201d he began. \u201cThe show is a lot of work. It\u2019s a monster production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel went on to thank a multitude of people who helped the show come to life, \u201cespecially \u2026 my amazing and talented writing staff who put in months of hard work and late nights to write not only the Academy Awards but this over-congratulatory statement I am currently reading\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel went on to share various anecdotes from the show, about the jet ski awarded to the winner with the shortest acceptance speech and the hot dog cannon built for Kimmel\u2019s mid-show visit to a movie theatre across the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBest picture went to The Shape of Water. Shape of Water, if you have not seen it, is a love story between a mute woman who eats a lot of hard-boiled eggs and a fish man with magic powers who also eats hard-boiled eggs,\u201d the host explained. \u201cAnd the most remarkable thing is Guillermo del Toro wrote this movie before marijuana became legal in California for recreational use.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-arts\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more-text\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Kimmel then brought up best actress winner\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/frances-mcdormand\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Frances McDormand<\/a>, whose Oscar was reportedly stolen after she set it down on a table at an after party. \u201cAfter the guy snatched it, he did the smart thing,\u201d Kimmel joked. \u201cHe immediately made a video of himself and posted it on Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo then he was arrested for grand theft, which is a felony,\u201d the host concluded. \u201cI would rather steal from Mike Tyson than Frances McDormand.
