If it fails to do so both sides could suffer considerably as a result,\u201d said Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb, chairman of the committee.<\/p>\n<p>MPs say a deal needs to be in place for continued participation in the EU funding programme by October at the latest.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-2 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-news\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<h1 class=\"rich-link__title\"><a class=\"rich-link__link\">Fears grow over EU university funding as grants decline even before Brexit<\/a><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The UK has the option of paying into the EU\u2019s science research funding as an associate member like other non-EU members including Switzerland and Norway, but the committee said it was concerned that the government had \u201copenly avoided\u201d committing to the EU\u2019s next round of funding for science research, Framework Programme 9.<\/p>\n<p>It is the successor to Horizon 2020, the EU\u2019s seven-year flagship research programme which has spent around \u20ac80bn (\u00a370bn) since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>MPs noted a number of ministers had made speeches reaffirming the importance of science to the country, but there had been no follow up through action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith just one year remaining until Brexit, and a commonly-accepted aim of reaching a comprehensive Brexit deal by this autumn, the time for setting out broad aspirations has passed,\u201d said the cross-party committee.
