{"id":903,"date":"2018-06-01T15:00:48","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T13:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/britishdailynews.co.uk\/?p=903"},"modified":"2018-06-01T11:51:12","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T09:51:12","slug":"brexit-davis-considers-joint-eu-and-uk-status-for-northern-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/britishdailynews.co.uk\/?p=903","title":{"rendered":"Brexit: Davis considers joint EU and UK status for Northern Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/northernireland\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Northern Ireland<\/a>\u00a0could be given joint EU and UK status and a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d on its border with Ireland, under new plans being drawn up by David Davis, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate response from the Department for Exiting the EU to a report in the Sun suggesting the\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/eu-referendum\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Brexit<\/a>\u00a0secretary was to put forward a radical solution to the thorny issue of future customs arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa May\u2019s Brexit subcommittee is split down the middle between the prime minister\u2019s preferred \u201ccustoms partnership\u201d, under which the UK would gather tariffs on behalf of the EU, and the \u201cmaximum facilitation\u201d solution, using technology to avoid the need for border checks.<\/p>\n<p>With pressure mounting to agree on a position before a summit of EU leaders on 28 June, May set up two working groups to find amendments to the schemes which could unite her feuding ministers.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/6423932\/david-davis-northern-ireland-brexit-plans-dup\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">According to the Sun<\/a>, Davis \u2013 who heads the \u201cmax fac\u201d group \u2013 was ready to drop his support for technological solutions, after police said systems, such as number plate recognition cameras, could become a target for sectarian attack.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he was reportedly drawing up a plan based on the \u201cdouble-hatted\u201d model in place in Liechtenstein, which would allow Northern Ireland to operate under both UK and EU regulations at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>A 10-mile wide \u201cspecial economic zone\u201d would be created along the 310-mile border, within which traders could operate under the republic\u2019s trade rules.<\/p>\n<p>An unnamed Whitehall source told the paper: \u201cMax fac 2 is tremendously complicated, but it\u2019s at least something the cabinet can unite around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The source acknowledged it would be a challenge to secure backing for the plan from the Democratic Unionist party, which props up May\u2019s government at Westminster and has made clear that it does not want Northern Ireland treated differently from the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>source:https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/jun\/01\/brexit-northern-ireland-could-be-given-joint-eu-and-uk-status<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Ireland\u00a0could be given joint EU and UK status and a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d on its border with Ireland, under new plans being drawn up by David Davis, according to reports.
