Corbyn expected to whip Labour to back public vote on Brexit

0

Party leader’s move could trigger a wave of resignations from frontbench MPs.

Jeremy Corbyn is expected to whip Labour MPs to support a Brexit referendum in the indicative votes – but could face a wave of resignations from frontbenchers determined not to back it.

The Guardian understands a delegation of shadow ministers, including known second referendum sceptics Ian Lavery, Jon Trickett and Richard Burgon, held a meeting lasting more than two hours on Tuesday evening with John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor.

One shadow minister warned Labour would face “a very significant rebellion” if it tried to force MPs to back the motion, and another said: “If we whip for it, we won’t have a shadow cabinet by the end of the day.”

The motion, tabled by Dame Margaret Beckett, suggests parliament should not ratify any Brexit deal “unless and until” it has been approved in a “confirmatory public vote”.

One shadow cabinet source suggested the amendment went beyond what had been agreed by Corbyn in calling for a referendum on any deal passed by the house, which some believe undermines efforts to reach a compromise Brexit deal that Labour has pursued over recent weeks.

However, there was also a furious backlash on Wednesday morning from the pro-referendum wing of the party against an interview by the shadow international trade secretary, Barry Gardiner, in which he said Labour was “not a remain party now” and it could have difficulty supporting a motion for a referendum on any Brexit deal.

Gardiner also suggested Labour was concerned that the motion could suggest the party would allow Theresa May’s deal to pass if it led to a referendum.

“It would be saying we could accept what we have always said is a very bad deal. Therefore it looks as if the attempt to have a public vote on it is simply a way of trying to remain because nobody likes this deal,” Gardiner told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

“To put that up as the only alternative in a public vote and say we will let it go through looks as though you believe that, at the end of it, remain would be the result. It is not where our policy has been.

“Our policy is clearly that we would support a public vote to stop no deal or to stop a bad deal, but not that we would allow a bad deal as long as the public had the opportunity to reject Brexit altogether.”

He said Labour could not be portrayed as a party that wanted remain at any price. “The Labour party is not a remain party now. We have accepted the result of the referendum,” he said.

The comments sparked immediate concern among MPs that Labour would not whip to back the amendment, should it be selected by the Speaker.

The deputy leader, Tom Watson, tweeted within the hour that he supported the referendum approach. “I’ve had many calls about Barry Gardiner’s interview on BBC Radio 4 Today, which I missed. Whipping arrangement have not yet been agreed. I support the Kyle/Wilson amendment,” he tweeted.

Beckett said she had been led to believe Labour would support plans for a confirmatory referendum; and the Guardian understands scores of MPs met in parliament later, to demand that the party whip for it.

“I rest my understanding on what I heard Jeremy Corbyn, who is the leader of the Labour party, say at the dispatch box, which is that we will apply the principle on going back to the people for confirmation to any decision that we’ve reached,” Beckett said. “And that’s where we stand.”

McDonnell said Gardiner’s comments were “exactly in line with party policy” and that the decision would be made on whether to whip the Beckett motion after the Speaker, John Bercow, has selected the motions for debate.

“We have got to prevent a new deal, prevent a bad deal, advocate for our own policy, try to get a general election if we can, but failing that, if there is a log jam, yes we will if necessary go back to the people.”

Other attendees at Tuesday night’s meeting included Andrew Gwynne, Dan Carden and Laura Pidcock, the Guardian understands.

McDonnell said he did not expect the indicative votes procedure to produce a clear result until Monday, but added: “I think there is quite a sizeable majority for a customs union emerging. I think there is the potential of a majority for a close relationship with the single market. On the floor of the House of Commons there could be a coalition around that.”

The latest frontiers of hip prosthetic surgery

0

Total hip replacement is one of the most successful and successful interventions in orthopedic surgery. Thanks to technological progress and scientific research, in recent years there has been on the one hand a significant improvement in surgical techniques, increasingly accurate and patient-sized, and on the other hand a significant evolution in the materials used to make orthopedic prostheses . And so, in response to the ever-increasing patient demand, minimally invasive surgery has been applied in recent years with extraordinary clinical results (reduced post-operative pain and rapid functional recovery) even in the orthopedic field. Today it is possible to implant a hip prosthesis without necessarily having to resort to high impact techniques, but more simply by using procedures that are more respectful of the anatomical integrity of the treated tissues. To illustrate the advantages of minimally invasive surgery in orthopedics are Dr. Daniele Patacconi and Dr. Roberto Lanzone of the Aurelia Hospital in Rome and N.O.C. of Ariccia (RM)

Dr. Patacconi, what does it mean in a specific mini-invasiveness?

Minimally invasive means operating bone or non-bone segments (for example cartilages, fibrocartilages, tendons or ligaments) without damaging the tissues that are not involved in the damage, thus causing the least possible insult to all healthy anatomical structures that must be crossed to reach that damaged. Following a multi-year and fruitful collaboration with dr. Etienne Peronne of Clermont Ferrand (FRA), Dr. Lanzone and I have devised a minimally invasive technique that allows a hip prosthesis to be implanted through an incision of only 5-7 cm, without any muscular section and resulting in a negligible blood loss. The by now proven mininvasive anterior approach is able to ensure excellent functional results to an ever increasing number of patients.

Dr. Lanzone, what advantages does this technique bring to patients?

It offers a series of numerous advantages: Respect for periarticular structures (Muscles, Nerves, Vases); reduction of blood loss; less post-operative pain; short hospital stay and recovery of functionality in a short time. The fast-track re-education path allows a rapid return to normal daily and sports activities; goal much sought after by increasingly younger, demanding and eager patients who want to resume their lifestyle as soon as possible.

The secret of how a Marano salon has become a well-known hair studio

“Excite me to excite”. This is the philosophy of life of Ulderico Nasti, owner of the well-known hair studio Rico Hairdressers by Marano, a well-known hair-stylist from Campania able to live intensely every single emotion and then transmit it through his creations. Philosophy to which he has always remained faithful during his professional career, strongly believing that “the most beautiful creations are precisely those made with the heart”.

Ulderico, when did you realize that you would have been a hair-stylist when you grow up?

Since I was very young I have always been a creative, passionate about everything that is art and fashion. A passion so profound that led me to attend first one of the best hairdressing academies and then, once I graduated as a master of art, several internships in Italy and abroad. All of these experiences have allowed me to easily establish myself in a very competitive world and to make my salon an important point of reference in the hairstyling sector. A success that today repays me for a difficult period in my life. In the past, in fact, I was forced to close my first 300 square meter workshop due to a serious illness; nevertheless, I never tried to fight. And over time I found the strength to turn the page to reopen a new atelier in Marano, bringing back the Rico Hairdressers brand and becoming an international stylist for a well-known company in the sector.

What is the secret of so much success?

I believe that the secret of my success I owe to the satisfaction I feel in creating an emotion thanks to my method of cutting SCULPTED DRY CUT (in practice I can sculpt my hair by cutting them dry) and in being able to imagine in my eyes, even before to realize it, the femininity that is hidden in every woman. As Michelangelo claimed, “Each stone block has a statue within it and it is the sculptor’s job to discover it.” But to create something truly unique it is necessary to possess a great technical and stylistic knowledge. Today my method makes me unique in the sector and gives me the opportunity to create always unique and personalized looks.

How do you manage to meet the needs of those who care about their appearance?

I can do it simply by bringing out the true personality of every single woman: for me each is an entity in itself, full of emotion, strength, love and passion. Without them it would surely be a boring world. Today, fashion is expressed by women who rely on me, eager to be unique. As Coco Chanel said “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself”, a thought that I fully share today and that pushes me away from a world, made of stereotypes, that wants us all the same.

Future goals?

I am always in continuous evolution and research, I always set myself new goals, but what I care most about is to pursue my philosophy.

In vitro fecondation

Very high success rates and fewer risks for women thanks to the genetic analysis techniques of embryos (PGT-A) and the possibility of carrying out heterologous fertilization in Italy

As recently highlighted by data released by the national and international scientific literature, assisted fertilization techniques (IVF, ICSI, IMSI) still present strong limits. According to the latest report presented in Parliament, in Italy the success rates of first-level techniques (intrauterine insemination) would be around 10-12% while those of in vitro fertilization are around 17% compared to 25% in other European countries . Percentages that are still too low, which inevitably have an extremely negative impact on the couple both psychologically and economically, often leading to states of profound frustration. “Fortunately, medicine has reached important milestones also in this field,” says Prof. Ermanno Greco, Scientific Director of the Department of Medicine and Biology of Reproduction, of the European Hospital in Rome. Today, thanks to modern in vitro fertilization techniques, the embryos to be transferred inside the uterus are no longer chosen on the basis of their apparent morphological quality (type A, B, C embryos) but on the basis of their genetic health . Multiple international studies have shown that even beautiful embryos from a morphological point of view can be genetically ill in their chromosome structure and therefore not implanted causing a failure of the PMA technique.

Dr. Greco, with the new genetic techniques, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), which allow to evaluate the quality of the embryo, increase the percentage of children in their arms?

Absolutely yes: 80% of women become pregnant from the first attempt. Several scientific studies have clarified that the ability of embryos to nest in the uterus depends on two critical factors: 70% of their genetic normality and 30% of the ability of the uterine tissue to produce some essential molecules for the implant. This research has shown that, even in young patients (under 35), 40-50% of the embryos produced in an in vitro fertilization treatment are not genetically healthy and therefore unable to give an evolutionary pregnancy. The recent chromosomal analysis technique using NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) allows, instead of the previous methods (PCR, aCGH), not only to evaluate all the chromosomes of the embryo, but also the mitochondrial DNA, that is the energy plant that has a fundamental role in embryonic and then fetal development. The advantages for those who perform pre-implantation diagnosis are, therefore, multiple: both preventive (reduction in the percentage of failure), and therapeutic (reduction of the risk of spontaneous abortion) and improvement (increase in success rates).

For which patients is this technique particularly indicated?

Many international scientific studies show that the patients for whom this technique is particularly indicated are young women who want to carry out a single transfer embryo, optimizing the implant percentages and eliminating almost entirely the chances of multiple pregnancies (4%); women with advanced maternal age (over 36 years); patients with repeated abortion (at least two / three abortions) or those with repeated failures (at least three attempts or more than ten embryos transferred); carriers of genetic diseases (eg translocations, inversions, Mediterranean anemia, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, muscular dystrophy, ect). Preimplantation genetic diagnosis can be carried out both on fresh embryos and on frozen embryos already produced in previous cycles of PMA. Moreover, the NGS is particularly valid for all those women who have a high capacity to produce oocytes with hormonal stimulation. But the achievements on the subject do not end there. In fact, it has been shown that male infertility can generate chromosomal abnormalities of non-negligible embryos, especially at the level of sexual chromosomes that can give rise to sick children. In this case two techniques have proved to be fundamental: the selection of spermatozoa (IMSI) and the selection of spermatozoa with intact non-fragmented DNA (MACS). Thanks to all these successes, as well as the possibility of resorting to heterologous fertilization also in Italy – the sentence n. 162/2014 of the Constitutional Court ruled that the prohibition of heterologous assisted fertilization is unconstitutional – it is no longer acceptable for a couple to go abroad to realize their dream of giving birth to a child. The success rates of our Center are in fact quite similar to those of other European countries: the experience gained by a team of highly qualified professionals allows us to crown the dream of a lot of motherhood in a totally peaceful and carefree way women.

Rejuvenate the face with stem cells

SEFFI, the evolution of lipofilling that has revolutionized aesthetic medicine

From the age of 40-45, both male and female faces begin to show ever more evident signs of aging. Before the 1990s, in order to counter this inevitable biological phenomenon and obtain a harmonious rejuvenation, a fairly complex surgical intervention was often used: face lifting. Then the lipofilling technique was started using the Coleman method. However, scientific progress and constant research have highlighted the limits of this purely volumizing method: the fat undergoes necrosis over time and is therefore eliminated after a few months. How can we get around that? To illustrate the latest frontiers in the field of Plastic Surgery is Dr. Marco Mannucci, well-known aesthetic surgeon, owner of the Center for Modern Aesthetic Medicine in Rome.

Dr. Mannucci, today we talk a lot about the Superficial Enhanced Fluid Fat Injection (SEFFI) technique. What is it about?

Through recent studies we have seen that adipose tissue consists not only of fat cells, but also of much more precious cells. In fact, around the capillary vessels there are small mesenchymal stem cells called Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs), which, if injected into other tissues, can become cells of the tissue in which they are implanted. SEFFI is therefore a highly innovative technique that represents the future of regenerative medicine: thanks to autologous tissue grafting, it restores facial features and tones and regenerates facial tissues.

What advantages does this method offer compared to the previous ones?

With the old techniques the fat taken was present in larger collections and the cells inside were undergoing necrosis. The SEFFI technique, on the other hand, is an advanced lipofilling that, thanks to the particular fat extraction method (2 mm microcannulas or painless needles), allows the introduction of living fat cells into the face to restore volume to certain areas of the face. If injected in depth, the ADSCs allow, in fact, to create new fat cells; if injected on the surface they allow to tone and regenerate aged skin, as they turn into Fibroblasts, cells of the dermis that produce collagen, elastin and other substances that give elasticity to the skin. In short, a real revolution in the world of aesthetic medicine!

Kiton: the Neapolitan haute couture

A prestigious brand that since 1968 has seduced the world with its unique and unmistakable style …

In the wake of the ancient Italian sartorial tradition, the Kiton company produces men’s clothes entirely cut and sewn by hand, rigorously made with fine fabrics (among which the vicuña stands out) and with the unmistakable style of the made in Italy, appreciated and recognized in Worldwide. Original and elegant, refined and exquisitely crafted collections, all strictly made respecting and enhancing the personality of each individual customer. The attention to detail (the tailors take 25 to 50 hours to create a suit worthy of the Kiton quality) is the main strength of this prestigious brand, born in Arzano (NA) in 1968, and today ambassador in the world of Italian craft excellence. “The quality of our garments is unparalleled” says Antonio De Matteis, CEO of the Neapolitan brand, before telling us something about his past living around the world alongside the charismatic founder, Ciro Paone; a style icon that has been able to elevate Neapolitan tailoring from a simple form of craftsmanship to an expression of art.

Excellent quality, timeless style and all-Italian taste are the pillars of your brand, loved by the most powerful men on the planet: Can De Matteis tell us how your passion for this job was born?

It was 1956 when my uncle Ciro, who then traded textiles in Piazza Mercato, decided to expand the core business of the family textile company to the high “artisan” tailoring to make men’s suits with fine and refined fabrics. Thanks to a strong determination, in 1956 he founded the CI.PA., a young and dynamic company that had about 40 tailors. Mainly affirmed in international markets – where the acronym born from its initials could be misunderstood with the English term “cheap”, that is economic, a name not in line with the company policy made of incomparable manual skill – in 1968 he decided to give life to the brand Kiton (from “CHITONE”, the ceremonial tunic worn by the ancient Greek aristocracy), quickly became famous throughout the world.

And in fact from the five production sites of Arzano, Parma, Fidenza, Caserta and Biella, today the company invoices around 120 million euros, exporting 80 percent of the product to 15 countries, especially in Europe. What is the secret of so much success?

The important goals achieved are undoubtedly the result of the passion for our work and the obsessive search for perfection in every phase of the process. In Kiton the most important capital is surely the human one, represented by the 800 artisans that every day, with wise mastery and imagination, give shape to clothes of a refined and inimitable elegance, made of many small details, carrying on the philosophy of a company that increasingly aims to preserve the craftsmanship of the processes.

The importance of the figure of the expert in case of road accident

0

Experience, professionalism, timeliness and availability the peculiarities required of a good expert

The kinematic reconstruction of a car accident is an extremely complex process whose purpose is to be able to trace the actual dynamics with which the accident developed, identifying at the same time the responsibilities of the people involved in it. The search for the causes that led to a traffic accident involves studies and research that are often complex and complex. Hence the need to address highly qualified and competent figures, able to correctly interpret the quantity and quality of information found at the site of the accident. “The importance of contacting technical consultants with proven professional experience is maximum, given the introduction in our penal system of the crime of road murder and serious and very serious road injuries, provided for by law No. 41 of March 23, 2016”, he asserts with Marcello Pirone emphasis, in partnership with the Gespra Srl of Naples, a company that for about thirty years has been dealing with the management of the claim from its embryonic stages.

Dr. Pirone, why is it important today to contact an expert in the event of a road accident?

It is extremely important to turn to a person capable of managing the claim to 360 degrees and to offer the necessary timeliness to avoid the pollution of the evidence, protecting his clients against the strong powers (which do not always have the right competence to evaluate the findings of an accident). It is therefore necessary to rely on a technical expert who is able to examine and process the elements available, and if necessary, to obtain further specific information, which cannot be immediately deduced from those elements, but which can only be reached through their analysis and overall processing. Moreover, if the scientific findings are entrusted to incompetent people, the result of the expert opinion can be seriously compromised and the persons involved risk seeing their position regarding the attribution of civil and criminal liability connected to the cause of the accident “prejudiced” same.

What are its strengths compared to competitors?

Surely the thirty-year experience gained in the sector, the total availability to customers to guarantee them that timeliness of intervention necessary to minimize the possibility of error due to the dispersion of information following the numerous passages “from hand to hand” to which the evidence is often submitted and the support of a company behind it, Gespra Srl, which thanks to the latest generation tools and highly qualified personnel is able to offer a reconstruction of the accident and its causes as faithful as possible.

You have recently launched a truly innovative app on the market. What is it?

Of a software for Android and iOS whose purpose is to offer a prompt action to our customers, providing them with valuable information on the behavior to be adopted immediately in case of road accidents.

You are also very active in the social field: how not to mention your awareness campaign on road safety, which sees mainly young people as the main recipients.

The goal of my commitment in schools is to spread, especially among adolescents, the culture of safety on the road and legality, aiming at the prevention of road accidents related to risky behavior. Given the high misuse of mobile phones and tablets while driving, it is important to highlight the importance of compliance with the rules of the Highway Code, promoting a cultural change that is truly radical and thus aiming to respect one’s own life and life others.
