The new frontier of losing weight
Graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Nutrition Sciences at the La Sapienza University of Rome, Dr. Roberta Ienca is an expert in clinical nutrition. Thanks to his long professional experience – consolidated in the bariatric surgery department of the same University – he deals in particular with the management of overweight and obese patients, having gained great expertise in the use of various treatments ranging from simple diet therapy to use of latest generation intragastric balloons. He is currently in charge of the Elipse Center of Excellence of the Nuova Villa Claudia Nursing Home, an important national reference point for the management of obesity and overweight, the second in Europe for the number of patients treated.

Dr. Ienca, how is obesity treated today?
Obesity is a disabling, developmental, relapsing pathological condition with multifactorial etiopathogenesis, which has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, in terms of comorbidities, and on life expectancy, in terms of increased mortality. Among the centers of excellence in the treatment of this chronic-degenerative pathology, the new Elipse Center of the Nuova Villa Claudia nursing home in Rome stands out, which I have been managing for several years: here a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified professionals follows the patient at 360 degrees, with a complete and innovative approach, constantly assisting him throughout the therapeutic path.
To promote weight loss, a method that does not require surgical, endoscopic or anesthetic procedures is employed at this center. Can you tell us more about it?
The Elipse Intragastric Balloon has been used for years, a state-of-the-art medical device designed to promote weight loss in obese or overweight individuals, when used in conjunction with a Dietary and Behavioral Change Program and under the direct supervision of doctors. experienced and competent. Until recently, intragastric devices were positioned and subsequently removed only with endoscopic procedures that required anesthesia; the latest generation Elipse balloon is instead positioned and expelled in a completely non-invasive way.
Does the positioning of the balloon take place in a truly revolutionary way compared to the past?
Absolutely yes! During a simple outpatient session lasting about 15-20 minutes, the patient ingests a small capsule containing the deflated balloon. After the X-rays have confirmed its correct positioning in the stomach, it is filled with water using a small tube. During the following four months of therapy, the patient will have to transmit the data to us through an “intelligent scale”, to receive advice and assistance in real time, in order to maximize the effectiveness of the Program. After this period, the balloon will automatically empty and will be expelled in a completely natural way without having to resort to endoscopic removal procedures. The practicality, comfort and safety of the patient are therefore fundamental peculiarities of this innovative method, which guarantees truly extraordinary results to a greater range of patients, for example even to those who, due to excessive weight problems, cannot undergo anesthesia and gastroscopies!
