The doctor Enrico Foresta, a well-known specialist in Maxillofacial Surgery in Rome, illustrates the latest frontiers in this field

Dr. Forest, what qualities are required today for a good surgeon?

The nose has always played an important role in facial harmony and human beauty. For a successful intervention, it is therefore necessary to take into consideration several fundamental aspects: the features of the face, its size, the cut of the eyes, the thickness of the skin and the size of the lips. Each nose is obviously different from the other, so each case represents a new challenge. And if until a few decades ago this type of intervention was used for purely aesthetic reasons, today a good surgeon must also and above all evaluate the functionality of the organ: the two aspects cannot therefore be split!

The interventional procedure aimed at changing the functional and aesthetic aspects of the nose is now more reliable and predictive than in the past. What are the latest frontiers in this field?

Today there are two different schools of thought. In the c.d. approach closed incisions are performed inside the nose and the skeletonization takes place “in the open”; in this case the success of the intervention is entrusted to the tactile sensitivity of the surgeon and his experience. With the open technique, vice versa, a small external scar is associated with incisions inside the nose that will become invisible over time. In this case the skeletonization occurs “in the open”: the surgeon sees the defect and modifies it. For years now, the best technique has been discussed. In reality the difference is made by the skill, experience and aesthetic taste of the surgeon.
