Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is performed in order to reduce or eliminate the excess skin of the upper and / or lower eyelids or to remove the fat under the eyes, the primary cause of the classic and unsightly fat bags. “Our eyes, our gaze, are certainly one of the aesthetic aspects most closely related to our relationship life. For a number of factors, however, the skin can lose elasticity, becoming wrinkled and wrinkled, thus making the eyelids inevitably droop (palpebral ptosis) and the eyes dull and heavy. In these cases, the only way to improve the appearance of the eyes is to remove the excess skin ”, says Prof. Mario Fiorese, a well-known Plastic and Aesthetic Surgeon, a professor at the La Sapienza University of Rome. With over 1000 interventions performed, Prof. Fiorese puts at the service of his patients a really significant wealth of experience, which goes as far as the knowledge of the most modern interventional eyelid techniques. “Thanks to technological progress and scientific research in recent years there has been a great development of increasingly minimally invasive surgical methods, which allow the surgeon to be able to treat the patient’s specific pathology in a less traumatic way”.

Prof. Fiorese, what are the aims of a blepharoplasty operation?

The purpose is to improve the aesthetic appearance and functionality of the eyelids, by removing or remodeling the skin, muscle tissue and excess adipose tissue in a personalized way. The operation – carried out especially in the case of swollen eyelids, drooping or bags under the eyes – can be performed only on the upper eyelids (this is called upper blepharoplasty), on the lower eyelids only (lower blepharoplasty) or on both (complete blepharoplasty). The surgical choice will obviously take into account the individuality of each patient, respecting the naturalness and harmony of the face.

What advantages do modern interventional methods offer the patient?

The operation, which normally takes place under local anesthesia, is quite simple and the patient can easily return home the same day. Blepharoplasty leaves no visible scars or scarring (because the incisions respect the natural folds of the face), and the aesthetic results are truly extraordinary and natural: in fact, it returns a lively and expressive look, a rejuvenated and fresh face without altering its peculiarities and proportions.
