The new frontiers of orthopedics

Modern regenerative medicine treatments represent an innovative and effective therapy for the treatment of orthopedic diseases. To illustrate its effectiveness is Dr. Fabio Valerio Sciarretta, Orthopedic Surgeon of Rome, member of the Board of the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS).

Dr. Sciarretta, for some time we are talking about regenerative medicine for the treatment of cartilage diseases. What is it about? The advent of regenerative medicine combined with orthopedics has led to the formation of orthobiology, a discipline that allows an innovative therapeutic approach, aimed at the biological regeneration of the tissue, rather than its replacement. At the onset of the first joint pain, some cell precursors are taken from the patient’s tissues, such as fat, bone marrow and subcutis. The concentrated cells, once injected, release numerous substances that locally activate the healing process by modulating inflammation, collagen production and the multiplication of cartilaginous cells. The literature has already confirmed the validity and the longer duration of the results of this method with respect to the well-known infiltrations of hyaluronic acid.

And in case of advanced diseases? When the damage is deeper and localized it is possible to introduce, in arthroscopy and minimally invasive techniques, a “scaffold”, that is a collagen scaffold soaked in concentrated cells, to fill the “defect”, repair the damage and give new vitality to the articulation. It is a real epoch-making change.
