Oral health is no longer just a clinical matter. Today, a smile has become one of the most powerful elements of personal communication. Through technological innovation, invisible orthodontics, and the latest developments in aesthetic dentistry, Dr. Annalisa Longobardi, a specialist in Orthodontics, discusses the evolution of a profession that has profoundly transformed the way people perceive themselves over the past few years.

Dr. Longobardi, how did your passion for dentistry begin?
My passion for dentistry has its roots in my family. My father was a dentist, and from an early age I had the opportunity to observe this profession up close, developing both a deep interest in dentistry and an appreciation for the unique relationship that is built with patients. At the age of eighteen, I decided to follow in his footsteps by enrolling in the Faculty of Dentistry. At the time, it was a rather unusual career choice for a woman: in my class in Naples, there were only two female students. Now, as I approach my fiftieth birthday, I continue to practice with the same enthusiasm, dedication, and passion that have inspired me since the very beginning.
How has the concept of a beautiful smile changed over the years?
Enormously. For decades, the prevailing message was centered on prevention—the classic saying, “prevention is better than cure.” While that principle remains fundamental, a new perspective has emerged alongside it. With the rise of social media and visual communication, the smile has become an essential part of one’s personal image. People want to present the best version of themselves, and the smile is often the very first feature others notice.
Is modern orthodontics very different from what it was just a few years ago?
I would say it has been revolutionized. Today we have virtually invisible clear aligners that make it possible to achieve outstanding results even in complex cases. However, it is important to emphasize that these are far more than cosmetic devices. Clear aligners must be prescribed and managed by experienced professionals because they correct not only dental alignment but also functional, temporomandibular, and occlusal disorders.
Once orthodontic treatment has been completed, what are patients most likely to request?
Many patients wish to enhance their results by further improving the appearance of their smile. Professional teeth whitening is undoubtedly one of the most popular treatments. Today, highly personalized solutions are available to meet different needs, ranging from intensive in-office procedures to more gradual at-home whitening treatments.

Are dental veneers still the most sought-after cosmetic treatment?
Without a doubt, they remain among the most requested procedures. Ceramic veneers can improve the shape, color, and proportions of the teeth while delivering exceptionally natural-looking results. Over the years, I have performed numerous veneer treatments, including for well-known public figures. For patients seeking a more conservative approach, modern composite bonding techniques also provide outstanding aesthetic outcomes with minimal invasiveness.
What is the most important message you would like to convey?
That a smile should never be viewed merely as an aesthetic feature. An extraordinary smile always begins with a healthy, properly functioning mouth. When health, harmony, and aesthetics come together, the result is not simply a smile that follows current beauty trends, but an authentic smile. And very often, that is what truly changes the way a person sees themselves.
